| Ivan Hicks and the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers
Last year Ivan Hicks and the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers set off on a US Tour to Louisiana in celebration of the group’s 30th Anniversary. This past May saw the group on the road again as they toured parts of Quebec.
Unlike the US tour, most of the youths in the group were available to go and it gave them an opportunity to share their talents as well as learn about Quebec’s culture and music. One unique venue during the tour was the Blair Orchards where the fiddlers were able to perform for folks among the lovely apple blossoms.
In preparation for this year’s tour, the group presented a special concert on January 31, 2009 at the Riverview Arts Centre. Initially the show was solely to raise funds for the Quebec tour but they decided to also donate a portion of the proceeds to ArtsCan Circle, a group dedicated to helping at risk Native youths in remote areas of Canada to get involved in music.
Now back from this year’s tour, the fiddlers haven’t slowed down. Plans are already underway for another major concert set for January 30, 2010, at the Riverview Arts Centre. Also in the works for 2010 is yet another tour. They haven’t selected a location yet but one this is for sure, they will be ready and raring to go.
